POST-OP CARE: IMPLANT SURGERY

  1. Bleeding – Following implant placement surgery, some bleeding is to be expected. If bleeding persists, place slightly moistened gauze pads directly over bleeding area and bite down firmly for ½ hour, repeating until gauze turns light pink in color. DO NOT eat or sleep with the gauze in.
  2. Swelling – Ice pack can be applied on the outside of the face over the surgical area for 20 minutes on and 20 – 30 minutes off for the first 36 hours after surgery.
  3. Medication – PAIN– Take as prescribed, NEVER ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking pain medications. BIRTH CONTROL PILLS – female patients taking birth control pills should use alternate contraceptive methods if antibiotics are prescribed.
    • Peridex Mouth Rinse – Brush your teeth prior to using. Swish and spit with a ½ oz. in the am and the pm.
    • Amoxicillin 500mg – 1 tablet 3 times a day until finished.
    • Motrin (Ibuprofen) 600mg – 1 tablet every 6 hours. Used for pain and swelling.
    • Over the Counter – Motrin/Advil/Ibuprofen 200mg each 2 – 3 tablets every 6 hours as needed for pain.
  4. Diet – For the first several days after surgery avoid chewing directly over any area an implant or bone graft was placed.
  5. Oral Hygiene –Rinse gently after meals using ½ tsp of salt to an 8 oz. glass of warm water. Brush your teeth normally, caution should be taken around any surgical site for the first couple of days.
  6. Smoking – Should be discontinued or kept to a minimum for the first couple of days following implant placement surgery.
  7. The following occurrences should be expected and cause no concern:
    • Swelling which follows surgery within the first 24 hours and may last up to 72 hours following surgery.
    • Discomfort at surgical areas.
    • A slightly elevated temperature within the first 24 hours.
