POST-OP CARE: PALATAL EXPANSION
Proper care following a palatal expansion will hasten recovery and minimize complications
- Do not blow your nose for a week.
- Use over the counter decongestant for a week.
- Clean nostrils with a Q-tip saturated with Peroxide for a week.
- Swelling – Ice pack should be applied on the outside of the face over the operated area
for 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off for the first 36 hours after surgery. Use moist heat
on the outside of the face thereafter to relieve additional swelling and muscle tightness. - Rinse gently every 3-4 hours, especially after meals, using ¼ tsp. salt to an 8oz glass of
warm water. Continue rinses for several days. After the third day, gentle tooth brushing
can be used in the surgical sites.
